Sally Davison, outdoor education teacher funded by the Bournemouth Schools Partnership, is leading some sessions with Year 5 and Year 4 during November, December and January. The emphasis will be on teaching group co-operation skills through team-building activities and orienteering tasks; themes which are developed further with Year 5 on the Leeson House residential visit later this year. To ensure maximum learning impact Sally will work with no more than half of a class in each session, with a teaching assistant in supporting role. The opportunity will also be taken to cover basic principles of preparation for outdoor work, such as the importance of wearing the right clothes to keep warm in cold weather conditions.
The central message is simple: there is a lot to learn outdoors and it’s fun!
