The Olympic and Paralympic Games are about much more than sporting excellence. Underpinning the Games is the philosophy of Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the Modern Olympic Movement.
He saw in the Games an ideal opportunity to develop a set of universal principles – or values – that could be applied to education and to society as a whole, as well as to sport itself.
These Values are:
- respect – fair play; knowing one’s own limits; and taking care of one’s health and the environment
- excellence – how to give the best of oneself, on the field of play or in life; taking part; and progressing according to one’s own objectives
- friendship – how, through sport, to understand each other despite any differences
The Paralympic Values are based on the history of the Paralympic Games and the tradition of fair play and honourable sports competition.
A prayer in preparation for the 2012 Games
Giver of joy and source of all strength,
we pray for those
who prepare for the London Olympic and Paralympic games.
For the competitors training for the Games and their loved ones,
For the many thousands who will support them,
And for the Churches and others who are organising special events and who will welcome many people from many nations.
In a world where many are rejected and abused,
we pray for a spirit
of tolerance and acceptance, of humility and respect
and for the health and safety of all.
May we at the last be led towards the love of Christ who is more than gold, today and forever.
Prayers written by Year 5 at St Joseph’s
Please help us to share peace and friendship throughout the world, and for countries to reunite and for wars to stop. Lord, help athletes to inspire and to show determination and courage. May these events bring us closer together and our world to learn respect. Amen.

Thank you for all the people who are taking part in the Olympics. Give them strength in all the races. Let them bring peace to all the countries that take part and let them play fairly, with respect, confidence and courage. Let this inspire all the children around the world to enjoy sport. Amen.
