Journeying in the Faith – Advent

Advent: From Darkness into Light

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light:

they who live in the land under the shadow of death, have a light shine upon them.

For unto us a son is given: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller,

The mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace… and all the people shall know.

Isaiah 9: 1- 7

HOW TO CELEBRATE ADVENT Advent is a season in which we prepare for the great celebration of the birth of Jesus at Christmas.  During these four weeks, we are invited to deepen our appreciation of God’s gift to us and the world of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.  So what should we do?

WAIT – for thousands of years people waited for the promised Messiah and Saviour.  We pray and wait for the Lord.

  1. REFLECT – We listen again to the call of St. John the Baptist to make our hearts ready for forgiveness and love
  2. ADVENT WREATH – a circle of evergreens, symbolising God’s love; three violet and one pink candle, reminding us of God’s light in the world.
  3. ADVENT CALENDAR – marks the 4 weeks of Advent, each day we think about our lives as a friend of Jesus –  “Come, Lord Jesus”.  Click here to view an Advent Prayer Calendar:  Prayer Diary Advent 2015

Don’t overdo it in preparing for Christmas, and miss the reason and purpose of this Advent time.  A Child is born!

Dear Heavenly Father,

I pray for the people that don’t have love, food or shelter and that they find it somewhere around the world.

I’m sorry for the times when I have not thought of others.

I thank you for my home and my family.

Please can you give peace to the world.

The Angels appear to the Shepherds

Dear Heavenly Father,

I thank you for all of the things that you’ve helped me with this year.

Also I’m very sorry for the things I have done wrong.

The Shepherds visit Jesus

Dear Heavenly Father, Holy Son,

Give me the will to know the secrets of my heart.

Let me realise that you are knocking on my soul, day and night.

Help me prepare for Christmas by using Advent as a reminder.
