House Football Match Report by Mr Worsfold
On 29 March, the 28th St. Joseph’s House Football Contest got under way with the knockout stage. St. Mark’s were drawn against St. Luke’s and this proved a close match, with James’s first half strike for St. Luke’s cancelled out by an equaliser by Eddie (Y5)for St. Mark’s. Some extra time was played but neither team could clinch the winner, so the result was decided on penalties. Sam scored for St. Mark’s but Jake (Y5), Michael and Conrad all netted for St. Luke’s who came out as the eventual winners with a total score of 4-2.
Fortunately, there was still enough time to play the second match, between St. Matthew’s and St. Johns’ – Two early goals from Charlie (Y5) put St. John’s ahead but St. Matthew’s fought hard and almost pulled one back just before half-time. The second half was closely contested until Connal gave St. John’s a 3-0 lead, but St. Matthew’s would not give up and scored a well-deserved goal when Oliver netted shortly before the final whistle. Final score 3-1.
So, on to the final – St. Luke’s V St. John’s! St. Luke’s won in 2009 and St. John’s in 2010 – who would take the title this time? In a closely fought game, it was St. John’s who took the lead through a goal from Connal but St. Luke’s had a well-organised team and Jake (Y5) converted a free kick from Conrad to equalise a minute before the end. Extra time failed to produce a goal so it was back to penalties again, with St. Luke’s finishing on top with strikes from James and Conrad.
Mr Worsfold congratulated everyone for a fine display of football and good sportsmanship. Well done!
