This year’s Harvest focus took place during our enrichment week ‘Brother Sun and Sister Moon’ (St Francis of Assisi) – a week where we focused on how we look after God’s creation and at our responsibility to be stewards of all we are given. This also tied in with the Papal Encyclical “Laudato Si” and our Bishop’s recent pastoral letter.
On Wednesday 7th October we welcomed back into school the CAFOD team of Isabella and Roger who led the worship centred on their presentation. We also invited the children to wear an item of GREEN clothing or accessory in exchange for a donation to help raise funds for replacing our planters at the front of the school. We are delighted to say that we raised £168.00!
All week the children looked at re-using and recycling in our everyday lives and attended workshops held by the Water Authority. The children also completed a Green Pledge Challenge Card which had one green challenge for each day of the week. To help with achieving the Challenge Card the teachers held the annual “Walk to School Week” from the Somerford car park, encouraging some walking and the immediate area around the school being safer. The pledge cards were collected in on Friday and offered as part of our Harvest Liturgy.
During the week we collected two types of donations. We had an impressive array of tinned carrots and potatoes which were sent to the Christchurch Food Bank to help replenish their stocks, and also many items of bedding and household goods which were donated to the HOPE charity supporting homeless people. All the donations made a fabulous centre piece for our main Harvest Liturgy which rounded off the week perfectly on Friday. The staff and children would like to thank Father Tom and those of you who were able to join our Harvest celebration as it represented a very special time for the community to come together in worship and praise.
