We are inviting everyone to take part in this year’s Summer Challenge learning project. This year we are asking children to complete ‘The St Joseph’s School Matchbox Challenge’. Question… how many items can you fit into a standard size matchbox? Not many you will probably be thinking. But, did you know that it is possible to easily fit over 100 items into a little matchbox? This is our 2016 Summer Challenge! Your child (and you!) will be surprised how many they can fit in when they really start to think about it! They will be surprised at how their perception of scale changes as they tackle the activity. Items that they thought were small when they started collecting will seem bigger! It will really get them thinking about scale, proportion and packing density.
Keep a note of everything they put in so they can see when they get to 50, 70, 100 even! We would like them to aim for 100 items – who will get the most in?! If you can then maybe take a photo of all the items spread out on a piece of paper and then another of them all inside the box! The leaflet below explains the challenge in more detail and has some ideas for contents and themes. We have supplied a matchbox so you don’t have to buy one especially.
Wishing you and your families a lovely summer break and we look forward to seeing the matchboxes and their contents in September! There may even be some prizes up for grabs for the most contents and the most imaginative theme!
